Secrets behind the TGB widget

Some of you will have noticed a new bullet item in the TGB widget today. Probably worth reiterating how we currently send content to the widget.

The TGB widget consists of a series of channels. TGB members occupy a slot in a channel which can either be for the entire hour or selected randomly from various pools which are explained below.

  • All the channels except the last one is reserved for TheGoodBlogs (TGB) members. These are bloggers who have put our widget on their blogs.
  • The first channel (with the star) is reserved for showcasing TGB bloggers. A blogger who is showcased gets to stay in the first channel for a one hour slot throughout the TGB network. To be added to the showcase pool, you have to prominently display the TGB widget on your blog, i.e. can be viewed without scrolling the window or alongside the latest blog post.
  • All the other channels are random channels. Refreshing the page will produce a different set of blog entries.
  • The second channel (with the orange dot) is used to show TGB members who have posted today. This is the Today pool. Note: if you are a TGB member who posted today, but that slot is currently allocated, you are still part of the selection for the subsequent channels below it.
  • The last channel currently holds a pool of good public blogs that we think are noteworthy enough to be included in the widget.

We will change the format as we learn and grow with the network and our community of bloggers. As we make changes we'll post them here.
